Tariff of Abominations
The Tariff of Abominations was a protective tariff passed by the John Quincy Adams legislations in order to protect the northern United States economy whose businesses were being driven out by low-priced imported goods. The tariff was known as the “Tariff of Abominations” by the South because the South was forced to pay higher prices for goods they did not manufacture. Moreover, the tax made it harder for Britain to pay for imported Southern cotton which led to the Nullification Crisis. In short, the tariff allowed for the growth of the North at the expense of the South.
