Abolition
The word abolition means putting an end to a system, practice, or institution. In AP US History, this term appears in the idea of slavery. Abolitionism is the movement to end the African and Indian slave trade and set slaves free. The first attempts to abolish slavery came from Thomas Jefferson, then Benjamin Franklin, a leading member of the Society of the Abolition of Slavery. Northern states abolished slavery following the Emancipation act. However, Southern states still kept the idea of slavery because it was a key component to plantations.
