Embargo Act
In response to the Chesapeake Affair, in 1807, Jefferson passed on the Embargo Act. It was Jefferson’s method of pressuring Britain and France to stop fighting and to prevent foreign nations from interacting with America’s trade (Jefferson wanted neutrality) but it backfired because in the end because America was not able to trade with any foreign nations. However, this act was later repealed by the congress in 1809. It hurt Jefferson’s reputation and it is known as the biggest mistake in Jefferson’s presidency. On the short term, it had negative impacts but in the long run, Embargo act was practical because it inspired manufacture. Other effects on America Agricultural prices decreased, unemployment increased, trading rate decreased, and people depended on the domestic manufacturing.
