Corrupt Bargain
The Corrupt Bargain of 1824 refers to the 1824 electoral process between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. While popular votes showed that Andrew Jackson received a higher percentage of votes, the decision was ultimately turned over to the Speaker of the House to convince the Congress. Because Henry Clay harbored bitter resentment towards Andrew Jackson, he made a “bargain” with Adams and persuaded the Congress to make Adams president. In return, Adams made Clay his Secretary of State. Because of this fraudulent exchange, it is known as one of the three Corrupt Bargains in U.S politics.
