Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise occurred when tensions between pro-slavery and anti-slavery were rising. Missouri requested that it would be a slave state. However, adding another state to an even number of twenty two states at the time would disrupt the balance of slave and non-slave states. Therefore, the Union added Maine to be a free state to fix the balance between slave and non-slave states. The Missouri Compromise also brought concern to the Louisiana territory, making slavery to be excluded north of latitude 36°30’.
