John C. Calhoun
John C. Calhoun was a Southern United States politician during the early- to mid- 1800s. He first began his career as a nationalist and proponent of a strong government, and later became an advocate for state’s rights, limited government, nullification, and free trade. He is best known for his defense of slavery as a positive good and for pointing the South towards secession.
