American System
Also known as the economic plan, this system was developed by Henry Clay after the War of 1812 and consisted of three mutually beneficial parts. It proposed a tariff to promote industry, a national bank to fund and facilitate commerce, and federal subsidies to promote agriculture through building new infrastructure such as roads and canals. This new plan sought to avoid Britain’s laissez-faire economy in which the government did not intervene with the economy, by allowing the government to control and encourage the growth of industry, commerce, and agriculture.
