Sectionalism
Sectionalism can broadly refer to the parochial viewpoint held by certain political parties or politicians. In context, it refers to the various political parties in the 1800’s solely concerned with their respective states and regions rather than the well-being of the country as a whole. The diversification of people, economy, and lifestyles in the United States resulted in bitter political debates between the North, South, and West about political ideas and economic policies, which created divisions and built tensions building up to the United States Civil War. For example, the more industrialized North denounced slavery, while the agricultural South insisted on it due to its heavy reliance on slave labor.
